Soapstone Tile: beauty and durability for living spaces

Because of its beauty and durability, soapstone is steadily gaining popularity as one of the best materials for countertops, sinks and for fireplace facings. However, today’s trend towards uneven, textured surfaces in interiors, which is a natural characteristic of talcochlorite (soapstone), has allowed it to take one of the leading positions among the topical decorative and finishing stones. Soapstone mosaic tiles have a number of aesthetic and durability advantages.

Soapstone Tile

Soapstone mosaic tiles come in various shapes, styles, and patterns, offering a versatile choice for your flooring needs. They serve as an excellent alternative to porous marble flooring, as non-porous soapstone mosaic tiles remain slip-resistant even when wet and are impervious to damage from standing water. Soapstone’s inherent thermal properties, such as heat absorption and retention, make it an ideal companion for radiant floor heating systems. These mosaic tiles are suitable for indoor applications, such as kitchen sink backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, and bathroom shower stalls. Moreover, they can be used for outdoor projects, including pool and patio tiling.

The maintenance of soapstone mosaic tiles is hassle-free, requiring minimal effort to preserve their natural allure. Simply wipe away any debris and promptly mop up spills as needed to maintain their pristine appearance.

Talcochlorite (Soapstone) is a metamorphic rock that people commonly refer to as “soapstone”. The name comes from the mineral talc, which makes up about 50% of this rock. Its smooth surface with a silky sheen appears to be covered with grease or wax, and it feels very much like smooth soap to the touch. We have written a lot about the properties of this stone in our blog.

Color palette and properties of talcochlorite

On the market of decorative and finishing materials talcochlorite, or Soapstone, is widely known in the form of black or dark gray large-format slabs 2 or 3 cm thick. Sometimes the slabs have an unpretentious pattern of thin white veins. The surface of the slabs has a matte, silky sheen.

Talcochlorite (Sophstone) is a relatively soft but very dense, non-porous and heat-resistant material. Due to the high talc content – an absolutely inert mineral that does not interact with strong acids and simple alkalis – talcochlorite has gained immense popularity as a material for making countertops not only for kitchens, but also in chemical laboratories.

Another popular application of soapstone is decorative mosaics tiles. Soapstone tiles can be both floor and wall tiles.

Soapstone tiles for living spaces

Soapstone tiles are a versatile and unique choice for enhancing the aesthetic and functionality of your living spaces. Crafted from natural soapstone, these tiles offer a distinct combination of elegance and durability.

One of the standout features of soapstone tiles is their remarkable resistance to staining and damage. Thanks to their non-porous nature, they are highly resistant to liquids and do not easily absorb spills, making them an excellent choice for areas prone to moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. This quality also ensures that soapstone tiles maintain their original beauty for years with minimal maintenance.

Soapstone’s natural thermal properties make it an exceptional choice for radiant floor heating systems. It efficiently absorbs and retains heat, providing a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home. Whether you’re walking barefoot in your bathroom or preparing a meal in the kitchen, the warmth of soapstone tiles adds an extra level of comfort.

These tiles come in a variety of shapes, styles, and patterns, allowing you to create custom designs that suit your unique taste and interior décor. Whether you prefer a classic and timeless look or a more contemporary and artistic design, soapstone tiles can be tailored to meet your specific vision.

Furthermore, soapstone tiles are not limited to indoor use. They are also a fantastic choice for outdoor applications, such as pool decks and patios. Their resilience to changing weather conditions ensures that they will maintain their beauty and structural integrity even when exposed to the elements.

Tip. Soapstone is easily scratched by glass or other household objects, but a light scrubbing with a coarse brush and a mineral oil treatment for a beautiful shine will restore the surface to its original appearance. No detergent, spilled wine, coffee or citric or acetic acid will have any effect on your talcochlorite tiles. A great solution for the bathroom, sauna, hammam, swimming pool. Tiles for summer kitchens are also very popular, as talcochloret (sopstone) is resistant not only to chemicals but also to weathering and temperatures.
